Getting to Ho Chi Minh City involves no hassle. As the city is well connected by rail, bus and air plane services to other parts of the country, there are numerous ways for Getting to Ho Chi Minh City.

International tourists can get into Ho Chi Minh City by flying in a plane from the other parts of the world. Tan Son Nhat is Vietnam’s largest international airport. The new international terminal receives all international flights and the old terminal is reserved for domestic traffic. Immigration is strict and is often time consuming.

The newly operational No. 152 air-conditioned airport bus is the cheapest way to travel into the city. The bus will drop you off on the west side of the Pham Ngu Lao area, or at the bus terminal on the south side of the Ben Thanh Market.

By Bus

Buses are always packed but provide a cheap way of getting into the city from destinations throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The numerous private tour company buses usually drop passengers off on Pham Ngu Lao just west of De Tham. From here passengers can have easy access to accommodation in the backpacker area.

By Train

The train station is located on Cach Mang Thang Tam northwest of the city center. The station is a short taxi or public bus ride away from the main hotel districts. There is an official train ticket office in the back packer’s district. Trains run on a daily basis throughout Vietnam. This includes service between Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi and other major cities of Vietnam.

By Car:

Drivers must obtain a Vietnamese driver’s license to drive in the country. This is because International licenses are not valid. In the city of Ho Chi Minh, it is not possible to hire a car without a driver.

Metered taxis, cycles and motorbikes are probably the easiest mode of transportation around the city. Cycles and motorbikes are available for rent per hour.

Transportation in Ho Chi Minh City is good enough for visitors to move within the city quite comfortably and at ease. Transportation in Ho Chi Minh City primarily comprises of train, buses and ferry services.

Bus

Inter-city buses arrive and depart from a variety of stations around the Ho Chi Minh City. Cholon bus station is the best place to avail buses to My Tho and other Mekong Delta towns. The Cholon bus station is one street north of the sprawling Binh Tay Market.

Availing bus in Mien Tay bus station is not that convenient as getting into buses from Cholon. However Mien Tay has even more buses which depart daily to areas south of Ho Chi Minh City. This huge station is about 10 kilometers west of Ho Chi Minh City in An Lac, a part of Binh Chanh district. Buses and minibuses from Mien Tay serve most towns in the Mekong Delta.

Buses moving to the north of Ho Chi Minh City leave from Mien Dong bus station in Binh Thanh district about 5 kilometers from central Ho Chi Minh City.

Buses to Tay Ninh, Cu Chi and points northeast of Ho Chi Minh City depart from the Tay Ninh bus station, in Tan Binh district west of the center.

Train

Trains mainly serve from the Saigon train station. The train services include the Reunification Express to Hanoi and serve cities along the coast north of Ho Chi Minh City.

Ferry

Ferry services are widely availed in Ho Chi Minh City. Cargo ferries bound for the Mekong Delta depart from the dock at the river end of DL Ham Nghi. There is a daily service to the provinces of An Giang and Vinh Long and to the towns of Ben Tre which takes about 8 hours to reach. Ca Mau is 30 hours away and departs once every 4 days. My Tho takes 6 hours to reach. Travelers need to buy tickets on boats. Simple food at times may be available on board. These ancient vessels lack the most elementary safety gear, such as life jackets. So passengers need to be careful while traveling on a boat.
